“D.O.A.: Expressionless or Alive” as everyone knows is based on the Video game franchise of the same name. This film was released in mid-2006 in Asia before in the U.S. possibly because of the larger market for video game inspired movies. For this reason, I managed to absorb the region-3 Asian release (image by S. L. Bledsoe in Amazon) even before the movie hit U.S. theaters. Directed by Corey Yuen (Transporter, So Conclude) an acclaimed Martial arts choreographer, (although Corey’s not as noted as the legendary Yuen Woo-Ping) D.O.A. looks promising. After all, Jet Li quoted Corey Yuen In Dim Belt magazine as “..if I need something unique, I go to Corey Yuen.”

Three sparkling but lethal women are invited to compete. Tina (Jaime Pressley), Kasumi (Devon Aoki), and Christie (Holly Valance) . Each of the three female leads have their believe motivation and has their bear baggage to carry. Once there, they must battle their plan up the fighter rankings through a bunch of other seasoned fighters to near the finals. Once in the final phase, the women expose a hidden “dismal” secret that is the apt reason for the competition. Aided by Helena (hottie Sarah Carter) and Hayabusa (Kane Kosuji), they must either join forces or perish…

Since the movie is based on the video game, interrogate something with a simple position with scantily-clad women intelligent in fisticuffs and, ahem, volleyball (which is a nice touch, there is a game called “D.O.A. Beach Volleyball”) . What can we request? The game itself is eminent for its hard-hitting fights and titillation factor (”bouncing b–bs” and skimpy outfits) so the film objective exploits those factors.

Collected, he manages to pull off an accelerated fast-paced action film that is both hard-hitting and visually stylish. While the status is lacking and with almost no decent character development, Corey goes for the throat with a lot of mano-o-mano fights and as great “PG-13″ brutality(no blood) he can spare to compensate for the lackluster status. The extensive fight choreography is the upright “lure” of the film. The film is based on a video game so reality is out the door.

D.O.A. remains good to its roots (gimmicks), as there is enough tease (but not explicit) to gain a male(like me) angry, shots of a few tanned skin and sexy curves to satisfy the raw sex appeal of the games. While it does have its goofy moments, (the nerdy guy is so annoying), there is enough action to divert our attention that it does avoid the screenplay from becoming “cheesy” nor “campy”. Eric Roberts is definitely miscast as the dreadful guy, he didn’t have the “raw appeal” for a baddie. Wrestler Kevin Nash even makes an appearance as Tina’s wrestler Dad. The film is short, and the ending gives you a small tease of the possibility of a sequel.

Since I am 90% clear that the U.S. release will have the same transfer, I will give you my select on the dvd quality…

VIDEO/AUDIO: Anamorphic widescreen. The PQ is estimable. Colors are vibrant, elegant and extremely involving. Dim levels are solid and strong when needed. 5.1 Dolby digital/DTS-ES English track. The DTS track is the blueprint to go if your equipped since it is very mighty and crisp. The 5.1 Dolby isn’t too shabby either.

OVERALL:

Corey Yuen made every difficulty to bring the video game to life. “D.O.A.” is a hyper-accelerated-kinetic stylish action film that gets the fight sequences (for a Hollywood film) fair apt and that’s the best anyone can hope for given its source material. Its’ a video game with hot chicks, what can we quiz?

RECOMMENDED! For fans of the game and the action genre, a first-rate rental for everybody else. (3 ½ stars)

After reading all the 1 star reviews on Netflix, I level-headed watched the trailer. Then I found out the director of the Transporter did this movie too. So….I unprejudiced had to check it out.

It was fun.

I’m not going to hold it, but it was fun and grand better than Ultraviolet.

- Quickly action.

- Acrobatic martial arts.

- Handsome girls all around (so mighty better looking than the Charlie’s Angels trio and they had Sarah Carter who I unprejudiced loved when I first saw her in the tv demonstrate Smallville)

- Eric Roberts as a abominable guy on the tv reveal Heroes and a unpleasant guy here. He’s perfect for those types of roles.

- Mountainous sets that acquire smashed to pieces

- Lots and lots of fighting that is so unrealistic you laugh at the silliness of it, but care for it at the same time

If it wasn’t for all the scantly clad bodies and sexual themes, this no-blood fight movie would have been rated PG.

Yes, everyone who gets slashed by a sword honest falls down with no blood. No concern went into any type of makeup work on the main characters after taking several punches in the face. Oh, well, we like our female leads looking sparkling throughout I guess.

It was a movie where you turn your brain off, laugh out loud a couple of times and like the scenery and action. Pure fun, but not an oscar winner by any stretch of the imagination.

You want a quality, thinking person’s movie peep The Fountain or Children of Men.

You want a zone out for a bit with the type of movie that isn’t another unpleasant effects B-horror film, then collect this.

This insiders look at the recording process plus a peek into the Becker/Fagen persona is extremely well done. How the Aja album is able to simultaneously evoke southern CA and NY imagery starts making sense now. Hearing all those Peg guitar solos that never made the cut along with Don and Walter’s commentary is something that any Dan fan or guitarist will appreciate. I always thought that the SD was largely Don Fagen and that Becker was sort of along for the ride but this DVD sheds new light on that for me. Walter Becker is an incredible producer and I would be willing to bet he contributes well over 50% lyrically. But where would they be without that Fagen voice?

I’m not sure where Aja stands on your list of favorite albums, but it’s at the very top of mine. Listen to it a couple of times, then watch this video. You will have a new appreciation for the album–its creators Becker and Fagen and the many musicians who played on it.

This DVD is a must-see/must-own for any serious fan of the Dan. Aja remains the duo’s landmark album; more than that one of the shortlist of truly significant, groundbreaking “rock” albums of the ’70s. Presented in a documentary style, it gives a brief background into the history of the band, then proceeds directly to the music itself. Donald and Walter attempt to break it down song by song, track by track, supplementing their revealing insights with interviews with the individual session players on each song, e.g., Larry Carlton, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Wayne Shorter, Michael McDonald, etc. I’ve shown this DVD to friends not intimately acquainted with SD and turned them into instant fans of the music. Btw, this makes a great companion to the Two Against Nature DVD. Although it lacks “2vN’s” lush DTS 5.1 sound, it more than makes up for it with a truly revealing look at a remarkable album for all time.

The legendary Howard Hawks directed this WWII classic about the Mary Ann, a B-17 bomber lead by Captain John Ridgely and featuring crew members Gig Young, Harey Carey, Arthur Kennedy, Charles Drake, George Tobias, Ray Montgomery, and John Garfield. On a routine mission to Hawaii, the crew arrives just hours after the Pearl Harbor attack and find themselves thrust into war. Other stops include Wake Island and the Philippines. Of course, one of the purposes of this film was to rally the American spirit, and it features some of the anti-Japanese dialogue you’d have to expect. But the film succeeds beyond the propaganda value. The action sequences are well filmed and exciting, with terrific aerial action and some good ground sequences, too. The camraderie amongst the crew is credible. Each member has his own small “back story” as you would expect, but these fine character actors make it all very believable (Harry Carey is a particular standout). This film is a true WWII classic.

On their way to Pearl Harbor, a flight of B-17 bombers arrive at the height of the Japanese attack at the start of WW2. After landing they are told to refuel and fly on to the Philippines where they are to fight the Japanese. Many problems ensue but the crew pulls together and takes the fight to the Japanese. This is truly one of the best WW2 movies with lots of action and a relatively unknown cast…stars Harry Carey, Sr, a young John Garfield, and the B-17 “Mary-Ann”. The interplay between crew members and the Marines in the Philippines is worth the price of admission alone. A long lost classic finally being released….DO Not miss this one..!!!

All the negative reviews I’ve been reading have left me puzzled. Is there some reason why all movies with famous actors should be hard-core and filled with violence and profanity?? This movie is a FAMILY film. The kids will love it, Mom and Dad will love it, too. I applaud Vin Diesel and the other performers for doing a top-notch Disney film for the FAMILY! Disney films are classically just that….films for the family. Mom, Dad, the kids, even Grandma and Grandpa (and any other number of relatives) can watch this movie together and all have a great time doing so. There was a time when this type of film was the norm, not the exception. What has happened in this country? This film is great and should be seen by all and bought for future enjoyment when made available on DVD and VHS.

Vin Diesel had a choice when “Pacifier” was offered to him. He could star in this low-budget release or return for “XXX State of the Union.” Mr. Diesel opted to do “Pacifier” because he’d have the opportunity to make a film that his children could watch and enjoy with him–unlike his previous releases which he considered too violent.

Surprise, “Pacifier” isn’t just for kids. While there is a “family feel” to the film, there’s enough action and suspense to keep the adults on the edge of their seats. Besides, the whole film is surprisingly funny as well.

Vin Diesel stars as a Special Ops soldier who lost a famous scientist on a mission. When he’s assigned to guard the scientists’ children while their mother is away, Diesel is triply determined to make sure the kids are safe. The children pose their own problems: the son dresses as a Nazi (turns out he’s secretly gotten a part in “Sound of Music”), the daughter is having problems learning to drive, the baby just really doesn’t know what’s happening. Everyone’s traumatized by the loss of their father–and having such a rough-and-ready guardian is hard on all of them. But, they band together when the family’s at risk.

Overall, an excellent film with a lot of good messages for children. Plus, a lot of laughs. Kudos to Vin Diesel. This little-known film actually shows a lot of depth in his ability to act that we have not seen before.

this so-so “giallo” was directed by ARMANDO CRISPINO, not Josè Marìa Forquè. Set during a sizzling Roman summer, “Autopsy” opens with a grim montage sequence depicting various people committing suicide/homicide. Straight after this we are plunged into a startling episode at the central morgue: as overwrought heroine Mimsy Farmer looks round, grotesquely leering corpses seem to come to life and get up from the slabs. Powerful stuff, but unfortunately the rest of the movie doesn’t come up with anything to top it. What follows is an involved, but not very interesting murder mystery, fleshed out with exclusively unlikeable characters - Farmer included - and occasional touches of cruelty. Certain scenes - the deadly trap in the crime museum, for example - are effectively suspenseful, but the tricksy narrative outstays it’s welcome long before the 100 minute running time is up. Picture quality, however, is excellent and the DVD includes a trailer for the film under it’s official export title, “The Victim”. If you’re new to the “giallo” and are looking to build up a good collection on DVD, invest your money in films like “The Girl Who Knew Too Much”, “Blood and Black Lace”, “The Bird With The Crystal Plumage”, “Deep Red” and “Torso”. “Autopsy” is passable entertainment, but hardly essential.

“Autopsy - A Chilling Slab of Unspeakable Horror”

Or so we read on the box of this DVD. Of Italian origin and first released in 1973 as “Macchie Solari”, Autopsy has not aged well as a horror movie. Interestingly, I believe the original title referred to suns spots, which are a recurring theme in the movie.

Autopsy starts brilliantly depicting a number of suicides that invariably end up in the autopsy room, where we meet the protagonist played by Mimsy Farmer. Mimsy is studying forensic medicine and writing a thesis on how to distinguish between real and fake suicides. Something happens and Mimsy begins to see the cadavers moving around.

After this promising opening, the movie strays away from the moving cadavers and turns into a murder mystery. A young woman that Mimsy briefly meets in her apartment is found dead in what appears to be a suicide. However, dead woman’s brother (played by Barry Primus) is convinced that it was murder.

Eventually, Mimsy realizes that the dead woman’s brother, who is also a priest, is correct. By then, other suicides/murders start occurring around her, and even she becomes the target of one attempt. Suddenly, she doesn’t know if she can trust the priest, her father, her father’s business associate, her boyfriend (who also is a target of a murder attempt) or even herself.

By now, this movie is no longer a horror film. Instead, it has become a classic who-dunnit film, with occasional sunspot flare- ups depicted a certain intervals. Surprisingly, the mystery is actually well-done. Agatha Christie couldn’t have written a better murder mystery.

Why the movie was titled Autopsy in English is beyond me. Scully and Mulder (X-Files) spend more time in the morgue than do Mimsy and Barry. Furthermore, the autopsies in the X-Files are sometimes even more graphic than in this movie. I can only speculate that the studios felt that “Autopsy” would draw more movie-goers than “Sun Spots”. On the subject of sun spots, the movie tries to suggest a relationship between sun spots and suicides, which doesn’t really fit into the murder mystery.

Overall, it is an excellent movie-if you like mysteries. But a horror movie it is not, certainly not one of “unspeakable horror”.

… it really does. I had a chance to see this video when it was shown on my local educational public television station quite a few years back. For those who are true Buddy Holly fans, this is an absolute must to add to your collection of Holly memoralibia. The interviews are top-rate and are probably the most accurate I have seen as they are from the people most closely connected to Buddy Holly and give a closer look and insight into both his musical as well as his personal life. This is one video you will definitely want to keep and watch over and over again (I still do every February).

This mans music was pure genius.I dont care how old it is this man was the most tragic thing to happen to rock and roll when he died.I wasnt even born when he got on that plane,but you cant go through life and not hear his music.

But here is some rare clips,and interviews with family members and friends.Well put together.I like to see the places where he lived and visited in his short career.Its all here.
While i am a Beatle fan i would have rathered they talked about Buddy Holly more than filling space with Paul McCartneys versions of the songs.Now im not saying i didnt enjoy them,i just felt there should be more Buddy Holly information instead.

I don’t understand this at all. Why are they releasing the My Little Pony story Pony Puppy again, but this time not with all the others. I even think that My Little Pony Two Great Pony Tales was also unnecessary because it had The Glass Princess and The Magic Coins, and they are already on the Complete First Season DVD set. I want to tell all of you My Little Pony fans to say no to a second release from My Little Pony unless it is released uncut unlike last time.

As much as my daughter loves My Little Pony and dogs, she really did not like this movie very much.

Who would have understanding that a lecture on Creation stories and Quantum Physics would be so instrumental in conveying the truth of a holistic perspective of spirituality?

Click HereAs one who has been trying to introduce the perception of spirituality being interwoven with every facet of life, I would say that this DVD is far more effective in conveying that message to audiences uncommon with the opinion than I realized. Though, I feel the subject could have been presented more effectively in my perspective, it would seem that once again, this beloved speaker finds resonance with his audience; leaving them in the lap of revelation.

I’d say that Nooma is like a share of candy and this is like a steak dinner, yet somehow the Nooma videos tend to pack a minute more punch and cater to more discussion. This is sort of done when it’s done. The discussion will happen, but unlike the Nooma DVDs, this DVD doesn’t reach along with a discussion guide.

Rob Bell has received a mountainous deal of criticism in his career for a variety of reasons. Some might have some merit, but most near out a desire for him to be something he is not. He is not a world class Biblical Scholar; he is not the greatest theological mind; he is not a person that will champion conservative ideologies, nor liberal. If you desire any of these things from this man, do not engage his work for you will be disappointed.

But if you are looking for a thoughtful person intriguing with faith, culture, and life, then you might have found someone that will really disclose to you in a refreshing confession of Christian faith.

Rob Bell is a pastor with a heart for humanity. He is a person that desires to unite, rather than divide. He is a person who recognizes the burden of our society and addresses them in faithful ways and “Everything Is Spiritual” is a astonishing testimony of God at work within Humanity.

I was blessed to seek this. And I trust that those who have ears to hear will near away from this experience moved in profound ways.

I’ve always wanted to see POSSESSION in its Director’s Cut, although I’ve never seen it before but saw the video box in the horror section. A favorite of Dario Argento’s, POSSESSION is the greatest horror allegory on divorce since David Cronenberg’s THE BROOD. Sam Neill and Isabele Adjani are excellent in portraying the emotional distress of growing apart. It’s also a comment on the state of Germany when the Berlin Wall was still erect and the Cold War was in full effect. As an added bonus, it’s also a bizarre monster movie, kind of a psychosexual Frankenstein story. Great camerawork, music and ending! Highly recommended for open minds and strong stomachs!
I remember watching SHOCK when I was a kid on television (as BEYOND THE DOOR 2). The last half-hour of the movie has stuck out in my mind ever since. Mario Bava’s final film (aided by his son Lamberto, a great director in his own right) is about possession, repressed memory, and psychological torment, with an excellent performance by Argento veteran Daria Nicolodi as the woman who experiences all of the above. Terrific music score by I Libra, a side project of Goblin; wish the CD soundtrack to this film would come out because I really love that opening theme! SHOCK is scarier upon repeated viewings and a must for Bava buffs!

Double features from Anchor Bay on one disc (one on each side). Side A.) is 1981’s “Possession” with Sam Neill as Mark who works for a mysterious agency employing him to track down a man “in pink socks.” His marriage to Anna (Isabelle Adjani) is disintegrating. They’ve become emotionally estranged. They also have a small son. Mark wants to save the marriage, he suspects she’s having an affair, so he has her followed after she moves out. Anna has become increasingly erratic and deranged and has moved into an old run down apartment where she harbors a hideous secret. And commits grisly murder. Their son’s teacher (also Adjani) is a dead-ringer for Anna—only softer and more nurturing. But Anna’s situation is something else again. “Possession” is a strange horror film with Neill and (especially) Adjani going all out. The “secret” is truly astonishingly gross. But the ending will leave your jaw dropping. Recommended for lovers of challenging films and Adjani fans. She’s incredible. Side B.) is Mario Bava’s “Shock” from 1979. (AKA “Beyond the Door II”) “Shock” concerns a woman whose first husband (a junkie who supposedly committed suicide) seemingly comes back to haunt her through her small son. Daria Nicolodi is excellent as Dora, the devoted mother who has remarried and moved back into the house where the first husband died and soon regrets it. Bava flourishes abound in a beautifully directed shocker with good set pieces and a creepy score. Scary, bloody with some bizarre nightmare sequences and a chilling ending. Both “Possession” and “Shock” are presented in good prints and are worthwhile for horror lovers. But “Possession” is not for the squeamish. Enjoy…

I have for a long time been a fan of apocalyptic, WW3-type thrillers, and this HBO Current tops my list as one of the best ever! Based on the fresh Trinity’s Child by William Prochnau and starring Powers Boothe and Rebecca DeMornay, By Dawn’s Early Light is an agreeable cautionary myth of what would happen if a nuclear exchange were started by dissidents in another country’s military and how the members of two different governments would work together to discontinuance it. It is also the record of Captain Moreau (DeMornay) and Cassidy (Boothe), two B-52 pilots assigned to knock out the leadership bunkers of the Russian military, and their struggle to do what they hold is the true thing. At first they feel themselves drag by duty to their country, but as they inaugurate to pick the chunky scope of objective what it is they’re doing, each of them must struggle with their have doubts and fears about what would happen if the conflict they’re fervent in were to escalate into an all-out war.Boothe and DeMornay are impartial two of a very astronomical cast in this film. Martin Landau turned in a bravura performance as the President of the United States, who is disabled in the aftermath of a nuclear strike on Washington and who alone holds the key to stopping the conflict. I loved Darren McGavin’s trigger-happy Secretary of the Interior who, thinking the President is lifeless, issues orders that could lead to the destruction of his country. James Earl Jones was stout as “Alice”, commander of Strategic Air Command’s “Looking Glass” plane and a man with legal and ethical doubts of his hold about this conflict, and Ally McBeal’s Peter MacNicol as Sedgwick, the young Emergency War Orders officer who is with the President when he is injured, was honest terrific. I also want to give a nod to Daniel Benzali as Bascombe, director of the FEMA bunker at Olney. Although his was a minor role, he made the most of it.As stated before, this is a valid film, but it’s definitely not for the faint-hearted. It probes deeply into the American psyche and forces us all to assume of fair what we would do in a position such as the one presented. Overall, though, it is an marvelous film.

The technical accuracy of the film, both in the equipment and the tactics displayed, heightened the effectiveness.What makes this movie stand out from other doomsday thrillers is its ability to present the dreadful strain of responsibility and indecision on people at all levels of the notify structure, and the personal ticket paid by those who could handle the pressure and those who could not. One particularly harrowing and very plausible scenario shows two Navy fighters in the process of preparing to shoot down an Air Force bomber that has been judged to have “turned”, both figuratively and literally.There are many apt dramatic performances in this film. Foremost among them are Martin Landau as a desperate and badly injured President, Darren McGavin as the Secretary of the Interior, suddenly thrust into a region of leadership for which he is unprepared, and James Earl Jones as an Air Force General commanding the Looking Glass affirm center aircraft.

Powers Boothe is kindly as a hot-shot pilot who finds himself slowly beginning to examine his murky and white understanding of the nature of warfare and his site in the overall report. Rebecca DeMornay shows that, when she isn’t given the makeup and savor costumes to rely on, she has mighty acting talent to tumble attend on.

This is a nerve-wracking, very credible lumber on the tightrope of nuclear devastation, tautly directed and masterfully paced, from its suspenseful beginning to its thought-provoking waste. By Dawn’s Early Light remains an effective thriller even after the slay of the cool war. Highly recommended.
